2022 Asian Games Represents Giant Step Forward for Esports
The decision is a step forward for the esports community that has been trying to bring esports to the mainstream. Esports’ inclusion in the 2022 Asian Games brings esports closer to an appearance in the Olympics, the biggest stage in sports.
The 39th General Assembly meeting took place online due to the coronavirus pandemic. The growing trend and influence of esports was one of the major talking points at the meeting. AESF submitted a report highlighting the growing influence of esports as well as its inclusion in major regional sporting events.
Which Titles Will be included in the 2022 Asian Games?

For Esports, as everyone knows, we are the founder of esports in our Asian Indoor Games [in 2007] for the first time. The Asian Electronic Sports Federation is led by Mr. [Kenneth] Fok. I will work together with Kenneth Fok to promote esports in Asia. – OCA President, H.E. Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah.
The official announcement does not reveal details of included esports titles. The 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia included League of Legends, Arena of Valor, Pro Evolution Soccer 2018, StarCraft II, Hearthstone, and Clash Royale as demonstration events. China took home two gold medals while Indonesia, South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan each took one. The 2022 games promote esports to a medal event on par with other sports titles.
This announcement ends years of speculation about esports’ inclusion in the Asian Games after the Olympics Council of Asia(OCA)’s announcement in 2017. Despite announcing its intent to include esports as a medal event in 2017, the OCA said the lack of an overarching governing body was a key hurdle in recognition as a medaling event and backtracked in 2018.
Esports fans can expect more news about individual titles that will be included in the 2022 games over the next few months.
