  • NFT Gallery; framed, painted, and digital art displays
  • Booths from various brands and entities such as Filipinas NFT, BoredPunks Society, Tetrix Network, 8Chain, JCI Womenpreneurs, and more
  • Learning-filled session by all-women panelists who talked about the Metaverse, Web 3.0, Crypto, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship

During the METAWOMAN: Meet the Woman of the Future meetup held at the Palm Drive Activity Center, Glorietta on June 29th, I definitely met them, the women of the future.

The Metawoman meetup is a full-day event putting the spotlight on women who lead and dominate the fields of non-fungible tokens (NFT), metaverse, crypto, web 3.0, and entrepreneurship. The event was organized by JCI Manila, Glorietta Ayala Malls, Likha, Filipinas NFT, kumu and ANC 24/7.

Aside from the informational discussions, the event was also graced with booths from various brands and entities such as Filipinas NFT, BoredPunks Society, Tetrix Network, 8Chain, JCI Womenpreneurs, and more.

The first panel I got to listen to, entitled “Defining Creativity” was hosted by Draper House Manila’s Celine Veloso. I was able to listen to women artists at the forefront of art in the Philippines: digital artists Marso63, Ana Luciano, art collective FilipinasNFT co-founder Angelica So, and Belle Osma, known online as Zevel Art.

[Translation: It really helps that there is a community of women that supports you. They give you strength and at the same time, you know that you are not alone… You know that somebody’s got your back.]

Aside from sharing their art journey, these women also admitted that they experienced prejudice and heard sexist comments at least once especially when they are venturing into the digital world.

[Translation: My example for that (a sexist comment) is when I went to ask about PC specifications then a guy commented that I am a woman and I won’t understand. Though I think, in web3 we now have a safe space, like what Ana said earlier, we now have FilipinasNFT which really empowers us women.]

The second panel was also an all-women powerhouse composed of Alex Dayrit by JCI Manilenas, Jacq Lim of NasAcademy, Diana Dayao of Kumu, and Isis Umali of Likhaan. The panel was moderated by Women in Blockchain Asia & Pilot Cheska Gonzales.

For the first time since I started attending crypto-related physical events, I have seen so many women in a meetup. That scene itself, as a woman myself, was empowering already given that this industry is mostly a men-dominated field.

One of the statements that struck me the most was NasAcademy’s Jacq Lim’s parting words where she shared three things women, in general, should remember;

  1. Empower yourself, help yourself grow.
  2. Join communities, find the community with the same interests and that will help you gain experience and growth.
  3. Say yes to opportunities.
