Economist Dr. Michael Walden, a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor Emeritus at North Carolina State University, sees some cracks. He spoke with WRAL TechWire on Monday about the latest in the regional and national labor market. 

With the September jobs report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics coming on Friday, here’s what Walden noted about how people typically hear about the labor economy: from that report alone. 

But there’s more than one data source for the labor market, Walden explained. 

“Most focus on the unemployment rate and job gains reported at businesses,” said Walden.  That’s the number we hear reported on the first Friday of each month.  “But the complementary employment report of households has been much weaker than the report from businesses,” explained Walden, and this is significant, because it could indicate there are cracks in our economy. 

One sign? 

The number of workers who hold multiple jobs has increased recently, said Walden. 

“The household employment report still counts this as one person employed, but the business employment report would now report two jobs,” explained Walden. 

So while the report on the labor market from a business perspective could make the labor market appear more rosy than it actually is, by indicating a new job was created, said Walden, “the household report would show that new job was taken by someone already with a job, and possibly because they are having a hard time keeping up with rising prices.”

Still, job gains expected for September

But even with the potential cracks in the labor market, Walden expects to see an increasing number of new jobs created when the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics releases its report on Friday.  

Dr. Gerald Cohen, the chief economist at the Kenan Institute, also expects to see an increase in the overall number of jobs in the economy, though at a slower rate than seen earlier this year. 

But Cohen differs from Walden on one measure.  “I would not say we are seeing a lot of cracks at the moment,” said Cohen.  “High frequency data such as jobless claims have fallen which suggest a strengthening rather than weakening job market.”

That’s not a prediction, Cohen clarified, it’s an analysis of the existing data in the economy. 

“I’ve been following the multiple job numbers and yes they have been picking up, but they are still historically at the low end of their ranges,” said Cohen, referencing the below image shared and reprinted with permission.  “We wonder if the pickup is actually a sign of strength suggesting some normalization of the labor market.”

“We will know more on Friday,” said Cohen.  “Though expectations are for something in the 200,000 range, which is a deceleration but still very strong relative to history and demographics.” 

And though the available data indicates that the labor market is slowing nationally and in the Triangle, Cohen said that there is still healthy employment growth in the Triangle’s labor economy. 

In particular, Cohen noted that job openings are still very high statewide, even if they have fallen from recent record highs observed and recorded earlier this spring.  

 

Jobs board update: Fewer are showing more jobs

Just four of the 20 job site searches tracked by the WRAL TechWire Jobs Report show that the number of openings have grown since last week, and where jobs have been posted, the percentage increase remains slim. 

And there’s a similar trend in the data, month-over-month, as well, with only six of the 20 job board searches tracked in the analysis show more job openings now than on Labor Day.

Further, in the aggregate, the total number of job postings tracked by the report has dropped by 1.75% month-over-month.  Still, where job openings dropped, they did so slightly, with no job search showing more than a 4% decrease in the number of openings month-over-month, whereas all four searches on the Adzuna job board tracked by WRAL TechWire show that job postings increased since a month ago. 

But just because there’s been a recent decline in the number of openings doesn’t mean that companies aren’t still competing for talent in the Triangle or in the state. 

“While there have been reports of hiring freezes or slowdowns at some of the larger tech companies, we are also seeing continued strong demand from employers of all stripes for tech talent,” said Brooks Raiford, President and CEO of the North Carolina Technology Association, NC TECH, which will host a Tech Job Expo this week with more than 1,000 open positions from more than 20 employers.
