MakerDAO is a decentralized finance, or DeFi, ecosystem serving a number of functions, such as facilitating borrowing. MakerDAO has two main maker cryptocurrency assets — the Maker token (MKR) and DAI. DAI is a stablecoin that trades near the price of $1 per token, while MKR’s price is much more volatile. Both tokens operate within the MakerDAO ecosystem for various purposes. Within the ecosystem of MakerDAO, the price of MKR can be dependent on a number of aspects, such as demand for the asset based on its usage as an asset for paying borrowing fees. In the world of MakerDAO, the MKR token also serves as a method of recapitalization, as well as a governance token. MakerDAO runs on the Ethereum blockchain, so MKR coin is not correct terminology.
