Build Quaint Seaside Towns in ‘Townscaper VR,’ Out Now on the Meta Quest Platform

Two clicks, and you’ve created a home in the middle of the water. Three clicks, a lighthouse. Around 40 clicks, and you’ve built a little market square, with birds perched on the nearby rooftops. And a few hundred precise clicks after that, and you’ve created a labyrinthine tower, an entire city in the Mont Saint-Michel mold—or maybe nothing of the sort. Maybe something entirely new.

What will you build? It’s truly up to you in Townscaper VR, out now on the Meta Quest Platform for $9.99 USD.

I’ve been in love with Oskar Stålberg’s Townscaper since the Early Access version first launched on PC in 2020. Described by Stålberg as “more of a toy than a game,” Townscaper gives you no objectives, no points, no time limits. You simply build for the joy of building, watching your creation take shape one click at a time, each with a satisfying “plunk” to complement your efforts. Complex algorithms underpin the deceptively simple interface—so, for instance, a fenced-in plot becomes a grassy courtyard. But discovering these small details doesn’t get you closer to an “ending,” per se. Create whatever you find interesting.

It’s a cozy little game—one you can play to unwind before bed, or sink hours into as you build the quaint seaside village of your dreams. (You can even play a demo in your browser.)

And now Townscaper is available in VR, letting you get properly close-and-personal with your creations. Still no objectives, no points, no time limits. Just creating cute little towns because it’s satisfying to do so, now with the added benefit that you can tell exactly how cute and little (or large) your towns are because you’re seeing them at tabletop scale in VR.

It’s a special little passion project, and I can’t wait to get in there on Meta Quest 2 this week and build a little Amsterdam of my own in VR. If your interest’s been piqued, as I said you can find Townscaper VR on the Meta Quest Platform for $9.99 USD. Put on an oversized sweater, get nice and cozy, and build something beautiful.
