RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – The Federal Reserve again raised interest rates last week, which is expected to increase the borrowing costs across the economy, including raising the costs of expanding a business.
That means that demand could slow, and demand for employment may slow as well, leading to a changing labor and jobs market that could see unemployment increase, Dr. Gerald Cohen, chief economist at the Kenan Institute tells WRAL TechWire.
“One of the big X factors is how much both the Fed actions and the market reaction will dent consumer confidence which had already taken a hit, though was starting to rebound,” said Cohen.
Still, Triangle employers are seeking to hire tens of thousands of people right now, according to the latest WRAL TechWire Jobs Report.
And while there are some signs of a pullback, especially in tech jobs, and some layoffs in the tech sector, the Triangle is positioned to be more economically resilient than other areas, if the national economy were to be declared in a recession, said Dr. Michael Walden, an economist and regular contributor to WRAL TechWire.
“Workers should hang on to their jobs, and make themselves valuable so they can survive potential job cuts,” said Walden.

Tech job openings falling, but NC still saw strong sector gains
Last week’s NC TECH IT Job Trends report showed an eight-month low for the number of information technology openings in North Carolina, with fewer tech jobs posted in August 2022 than there were one year prior.
And while some 31,853 jobs were posted in August, the data shows the third consecutive monthly decrease since job openings in North Carolina’s information technology sector hit record highs in May 2022.
As threat of layoffs grows, which workers are the most vulnerable?
Still, a monthly report on tech jobs from CompTIA found that North Carolina ranked first overall for the difference in tech job postings between July 2022 and August 2022.
North Carolina led the nation, with a positive change of plus 700 tech job openings, according to the report. And, overall, North Carolina ranked sixth in the nation for the total number of job openings in August 2022, while the state is the ninth most populous state in America.
The report indicates that much of the gains in tech sector job openings is coming from Raleigh, with a +472 difference month-over-month, the second-most gains of any metropolitan region in the nation, and from Charlotte, with a +146 difference month-over-month, the seventh-most gains of any metro.
High-tech job openings in NC drop to lowest total in 8 months
Here’s the latest
On 13 of the 20 job sites tracked by WRAL TechWire for the weekly report, job postings have increased week-over-week. But only nine of the 20 job site searches show more jobs open now than one month ago, according to the analysis.
However, in the aggregate, the total number of job postings tracked by the report has increased by 8.74% month-over-month, with 29,248 additional job postings total than a month ago.
Much of those month-over-month gains in job postings comes from increases in job postings on the job board Adzuna. It showed gains of more than 12,900 postings in Wake County month-over-month and an increase month-over-month of nearly 5,900 job postings in Durham County. Tech job openings may be decreasing, however, with more evidence supporting the NC TECH report.
Job postings on Dice.com, a job board specializing in IT roles, shows decreases in postings of about 5.5% month-over-month. But the decline in IT jobs may have begun earlier in the summer, with the data showing that job openings on Dice.com based in Wake County have fallen from more than 18,700 openings in mid-June to less than 17,400 openings in the latest report.
That’s coming as recent layoffs have hit high-profile companies headquartered in the Triangle, including Pendo and Avaya.

AMA Triangle
AMA Triangle, the fifth-largest chapter in American Marketing Association’s nationwide network, aims to be a go-to resource for all things marketing in the Triangle. The organization provides professional training, free career webinars and a job board offering free resume placement for marketing professionals.
As of Monday, the AMA Triangle job board shows 94 roles close to Raleigh (up from 84 roles posted last week), and another 86 roles, some of which overlap, close to Durham (up from 76 last week).
American Underground
Durham-based startup hub American Underground (Editor’s Note: American Underground is owned by Capitol Broadcasting Company, the parent company of WRAL TechWire) regularly posts job openings on its job board. Job seekers can filter their search by company, location and job function. As of Monday, the site shows 176 jobs at 53 companies.
Bio Jobs Hub
Last year, WRAL TechWire and the North Carolina Biotechnology Center launched a Bio Jobs Hub platform focused on biopharma manufacturing — one of North Carolina’s largest industries, employing over 26,000 people.
Typical biopharma jobs include process technicians, maintenance and/or instrumentation technicians, quality assurance and quality control associates, process development scientists and process engineers. This industry also offers competitive entry-level salaries, from $42,000 to $60,000. Scientists, skilled laborers and recent graduates can use the Bio Jobs Hub resource to find career and training opportunities in their area. Users can search by location, job category/activity and region.
Many biopharma companies are hiring in the Triangle.
Leadership Triangle
Leadership Triangle’s job board is full of job opportunities, including from small, mid-size, and large employers. The site lists 1,628 job openings at 30 companies.
NCBiotech
The North Carolina Biotechnology Center’s extensive jobs board lists open jobs and internships from local life science companies and research organizations. The organization recently updated the user interface with a fresh design. Job seekers can filter their search results by position title, job function and location. NCBiotech also touts jobs through its Bio Jobs Hub program.
The site lists 148 job openings as of Monday, up from 131 last week. (Editor’s Note: This list does not include openings posted by recruiting/staffing firms.)
NC TECH
The North Carolina Technology Association (NC TECH) has an interactive job board that you can use to find your next career opportunity. Users can search by keyword, location, category, type (full-time or part-time) and experience level.
Raleigh Founded
Raleigh Founded, a startup incubator and coworking space that is celebrating its 10th anniversary soon, has its own job board. Job seekers can filter results by company, company size, industry and job function. The site currently lists 57 positions as of Monday.
Triangle Region Job Board
Leadership Triangle, Raleigh Founded and American Underground teamed up to create the Triangle Region Job Board, which synthesizes all of the openings posted on the organizations’ job boards.
As of Monday, the site shows 2,874 job openings. That’s up 112 openings from last week.
Work in the Triangle
Work in the Triangle, a Wake County Economic Development program, regularly shares new openings through its Twitter feed, @WorkTriangleNC. The program launched a job board on its website earlier this year, with 7,164 job openings on Monday.
Last week, there were 6,998 openings, while two weeks ago, there were 8,143 openings.
Still, of the current job openings, 5,415 are technology jobs (up from 5,280 job openings a week ago, but still down from 6,364 openings the prior week and 7,105 openings three weeks ago), 951 are advanced manufacturing positions (up one opening from a week ago), 372 are in cleantech (up from 354 openings last week) and 425 are in life sciences roles (up 12 openings from last week).

- Amazon: 91 job openings in the Triangle, though some roles can be done remotely, according to the company’s career page. Amazon is closing multiple North Carolina facilities, though a company spokesperson told WRAL TechWire that Amazon is not laying off any workers. Workers at an Amazon facility in Garner continue efforts to unionize.
- Apple (corporate roles): 70 job openings in the Triangle, according to the company’s career page, down 10 roles from a week ago. The company announced the iPhone 14 and other products at an event produced earlier this month.
- Bandwidth: 14 job openings in Raleigh, according to the company’s career page. The company will require its employees to work in-person five days per week, WRAL TechWire reported this month.

- Eli Lilly: 34 job openings in Research Triangle Park, according to the company’s career page
- Fidelity Investments: 570 job openings in Durham, according to the company’s career page, up 15 job openings from last week
- FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies: 62 job openings in the Triangle, according to the company’s career page
- Google: 202 job openings in Durham, according to the company’s career page, with one additional role at Google Fiber in Durham. The company is making cuts in some areas of the company but is expected to continue to hire for the Durham engineering hub, WRAL TechWire reported earlier this month.
