Technology Recap:

Bitcoin:

  • A fix for btcd’s wire parsing library was pushed to help fix the issue affecting a large number of Lightning network nodes. The fix was packaged into a hotfix release for LND. 

  • River Financial announces RLS: River Lightning Services. RLS is a Lightning gateway for developers to enable Lightning network deposits and withdrawals utilizing a simple API without running any Lightning infrastructure. 

Ethereum:

  • Vitalik Buterin shares his slides from his presentation on Multi-Provers in rollups.

  • This week is Ethereum’s flagship Devcon which is taking place in Bogotá, Colombia. Feel free to watch the livestreams and gain info here. 

  • Erigon releases their latest update including a new versioning scheme, v2.27.0. This update also includes support for BSC’s Nano fork and experimental light client commands. 

  • Within the past week, Erigon issued another release, v2.28.0 with focus on several stability fixes and optimizations for working with PoS. 

  • Ben Edgington shares the latest from his book focused on the Merge and the new consensus layer.

  • Offchain Labs acquires Prysmatic Labs, the leading Ethereum consensus client. The Prysmatic Labs team will continue to develop Prysm as a fully open-source and neutral consensus client. 

  • Polygon launches its zkEVM public testnet with an open-source ZK proving system! 

  • Nethermind introduces UniStark, a transpiled/compiled Uniswap V3 via Warp for StarkNet. 

  • Aztec Network introduces Noir, the universal language of zero knowledge. Noir is a Rust-based domain specific language (DSL) for creating and verifying zero knowledge proofs. 

  • MakerDAO initiates $500M investment in US treasuries, corporate bonds, and more. For the allocation, MarkerDAO partnered with DeFi asset advisor Monetalis.

  • Lido Finance kicks off their journey towards direct ETH staking on layer-2 with token bridging to both Arbitrum One and Optimism. 

  • OpenSea is now officially live on Avalanche! 

  • zkSync shares five updates from their fast growing ecosystem in preparation for zkSync v2.0’s mainnet launch. 

  • Paradigm shares their stance on Ethereum’s New ‘Staking’ Model and how it Does Not Make ETH A Security. 

  • BNB Smart Chain will undergo a hard fork as a fix for the recent exploit that drained the platform on October 6, 2022 today at 08:00 UTC at block height 22107423.

  • Polkadot updates their staking dashboard with focus on nomination pools! Nomination pools are natively hosted on-chain and are part of the Polkadot runtime, thus they are upgradable, secure, and fully embedded as part of the Relay Chain. 

  • MobileCoin launched eUSD, their first stablecoin with support of Reserve Protocol. eUSD is backed by a fully collateralized basket of USDC, TUSD, and USDP. 

  • Argent introduces dappland, the best place to find and explore leading Dapps across the StarkNet ecosystem. 

  • As of October 4th, 2022 someone has been spamming the Zcash network with shielded transactions in every block that contain hundreds of outputs. The scammer has successfully tripled the size of the Zcash blockchain to over 100GB by maxing each 2MB block every 75 seconds. 

  • DefiLlama launches their borrowing optimizer. Users can now input collateral and token to borrow and the platform will display a list of markets one can use. 

  • Reserves in the stETH/ETH Curve Finance LP have more than doubled since the Merge. 

  • Flashbots looks to spin out MEV-Boost from their core team into its own self-sustaining open-source software project. 

  • OpenZeppelin Contracts issues their latest release with support for Cairo v0.4.0! The support for Cairo includes proxy initialization, updated documents, broader test coverage and more. 

  • Delphi Labs introduces slAMM: A Unified Model for Cross-Chain Liquidity. 

  • LayerZero Labs announces their completed integration with Aptos Labs. Their technology will bring interoperability, security, and seamless omni-chain transaction to Aptos mainnet. 

  • Nftperp has been introduced which is a perpetual futures DEX on Arbitrum that allows one to trade blue-chip NFTs without actually owning them. 


Hacks | Vulnerabilities | Exploits:

  • Binance Bridge on BSC was exploited for 2M BNB which was ~$566M USD. The attacker convinced the Binance Bridge to send them 1M BNB twice through forging a proof that passed verification of the contract. 

  • Following the Binance Bridge (BSC Token Hub between BNB Beacon Chain (BEP2) and BNB Chain (BSC + BEP20)) attack on BSC, CZ asked all validators to temporarily suspend BSC. The chain resumed operation around 06:40 UTC.

  • Mango Markets on Solana was exploited for ~$100M+ due to market manipulation of a low liquidity token (MNGO) used as collateral. Following the event, the attacker started speaking in a thread via Realms as well as Mango disabling deposits on the front-end as a precautionary measure. 

  • QANplatform’s bridge smart contract was hacked on Ethereum and the attacker managed to withdraw tokens in excess of $1M USD. 

  • TempleDAO was exploited for ~$2M USD on Ethereum due to failure to validate inputs. 

  • BlockSec and Supremacy confirm that both ParaSwap’s deployer address and Curve Finance’s deployer address are vulnerable to the Profanity vulnerability. Private keys for ParaSwap were compromised. 

  • Carrot on BSC was attacked due to a public function to transfer rewards. 


Mainstream Recap:

  • The EU agrees on the eighth package of sanctions against Russia which banned all bitcoin and cryptocurrency wallets, accounts, and custody services in Russia.

  • Google selects Coinbase to allow cloud payments with crypto and will explore using Coinbase Prime, for storing/trading crypto. 

  • Two executives at crypto trading platform Celsius cashed out at least $17M and as much as $23M in crypto shortly before the company halted withdrawals, reports Gizmodo. 

  • FTX and Visa announced a long-term global partnership which includes FTX offering a FTX-branded Visa debit card to FTX customers internationally. 

  • Singapore’s central bank, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), has granted Coinbase in-principal approval for a DPT license to operate in Singapore.

  • DeFi platform, Zerion, raised $12.3M in an effort to disrupt the crypto wallet landscape.
