Shanghai will host the 5th World Artificial Intelligence Conference from September 1 to 3, and one of its main exhibitions will be a metaverse, an artificially intelligent, computer-generated virtual reality, according to officials on Friday. The city is working to create a top-tier artificial intelligence development cluster.

More than 200 exhibitors have come to the event, with the theme “Intelligent Connectivity, Infinite Multiverse,” to display their goods in the 15,000 square meter exhibition space. More than 30% of these businesses will be debuting this show, according to Wu Jincheng, director of the Shanghai Commission of Economy and Informatization, who spoke at a news conference on Friday.

The WAIC seeks to thoroughly understand the advancement of AI and the metaverse, connect the most recent ideas and developments in AI around the globe, and present Shanghai’s perspective on AI, according to Wu, who also noted that the WAIC has reached the end of its preliminary work.

The conference’s emphasis on the metaverse mirrors the city’s aim to promote a variety of futuristic breakthroughs, including as low-carbon technologies, the metaverse, and smart devices, which was announced in July of this year

The city has committed to supporting and integrating the metaverse with the change of its population, industry, and digital environment. According to Wu, the size of the metaverse sector is anticipated to reach 350 billion yuan ($51 billion) by 2025, and the city wants to develop 10 globally competitive corporations and 100 specialized companies.

According to Ren Aiguang, a MIIT official, “the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will continue to work with Shanghai in advancing AI development, promote the WAIC to become a top AI event globally, and explore collaboration and innovation in the intelligent economy.”

More than 200 significant industrial projects with a combined total of more than 60 billion yuan have been completed over the last four years at the WAIC, and more than 200 novel items have made their debut there.
