SANFORD – The global automotive company GKN Automotive, a manufacturer of electric drive trains, will close one of its North Carolina manufacturing facilities permanently by the end of March 2023.
Along with the closure of the facility, which is located at 4901 Womack Road in Sanford, 47 workers will be laid off.
In a required legal notice sent to the North Carolina Department of Commerce the company noted that it is in the process of “reorganizing our manufacturing operations with respect to the products made in this facility.”
The facility will close on March 31, 2023, according to the notice, sent under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act. The North Carolina Department of Commerce maintains a public report on layoffs and facility closures on its website, and this decision by GKN Automotive is the latest addition.
GKN Automotive also operates facilities in Newton, Mebane, and Timberlake, according to the company’s webpage.
The company has a “long relationship with Jaguar TCS Racing and Formula E.” On Monday, Durham-headquartered Wolfspeed announced a partnership with Jaguar Land Rover that built upon a prior relationship with Jaguar TCS Racing and Formula E, as well.
