LG Display unveils ‘first’ high-resolution stretchable display

LG Display has launched the first 12″ high-resolution display equipped with free-form technology that enables it to be extended, folded and twisted without distortion or damage.

The Stretchable display is claimed to be the first to achieve 20% stretchability, a resolution of 100ppi and full-colour RGB. Its high flexibility, durability and reliability maximise its potential for commercialisation.

Based on a highly resilient film-type substrate made of the silicon used in contact lenses, the 12″ display boasts a rubber band-like flexibility that allows it to be stretched to 14″.

The Stretchable display uses a micro-LED light source with a pixel pitch of less than 40μm, allowing it to withstand significant external impacts, as well as a resolution that competes with most existing monitors. Unlike a conventional linear-wired system, the Stretchable display’s flexible, S-form spring-wired system’s optimal structure can endure repetitive changes to its form, making it particularly durable.

The Stretchable display can be easily attached to curved surfaces such as skin, clothing, furniture, cars or aircraft, making it potentially usable in industries such as fashion and gaming.

The product is the result of a national R&D project into next-generation displays, involving 20 organisations, that LG Display was selected to lead by South Korea’s ministry of trade, industry and energy in 2020.
