The Singapore government is set to introduce a unified SMS Sender ID, gov.sg, for all its agencies starting 1 July 2024.

This initiative aims to streamline government communications by ensuring all SMSes from government bodies come from the single Sender ID, gov.sg, instead of multiple individual IDs.

The new system is designed to help the public easily recognise legitimate government messages and protect against impersonation scams.

The government has collaborated with SMS aggregators and all telecommunications service providers in Singapore to safeguard the gov.sg Sender ID from spoofing.

While most government SMS communications will use this unified ID, exceptions include the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Singapore Police Force (SPF) and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) who will use their own specific numbers.

Government agencies in Singapore send over 100 million SMSes annually for various purposes, including policy updates and transaction notifications.

SMS remains a crucial communication platform due to the widespread use of mobile phones.

Examples of government communications that will be sent through the gov.sg Sender ID include updates on personal CPF matters, transaction statuses, and appointment details from the Central Provident Fund Board.

Other examples are information on season parking, parking offence administration, and HDB Flat and Loan Eligibility systems from the Housing Development Board.

The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority will send reminders to renew Identity Cards and Passports while the Land Transport Authority will provide updates on the application status and renewal of vocational licenses.

The rollout of the gov.sg SMS Sender ID will begin on 18 June 2024, with full implementation by 1 July 2024.

The public is encouraged to stay vigilant against scams and verify the official gov.sg Sender ID in government SMSes.

Sim Feng-Ji, Deputy Secretary, Smart Nation Group, said,

“This consolidated gov.sg SMS Sender ID is designed to give the public added confidence and ease of mind when it comes to identifying legitimate SMSes from government agencies.

It exemplifies the government’s commitment in stamping out malicious attempts that undermine the public’s trust in government communications.”
