Samsung embraces virtual production for display ad video

The revolution in virtual production has entered a new phase as even commercials for display technology are now being shot in virtual studios using LED backdrops.

Only this week it emerged that a campaign video for Samsung’s latest Ark gaming monitor, featuring esports presenter Iain Chambers, has been produced at Ramaz Studios in London by creatives from VISUALAB Media.

Writing on LinkedIn yesterday, Damon Crowhurst, head of display at Samsung Business UK, commented: “Had great fun creating a campaign video for our latest Ark Gaming monitor. It was my first time in a virtual production studio using massive LED as a backdrop. Really interesting to see how the creatives from VISUALAB Media used the LED canvas in conjunction with the content on the Ark monitor. Thank you Ramaz Studios – a really great space you have there.”

An accompanying video with the social media post shows the Samsung Odyssey Ark monitor in action at the virtual production studio. Odyssey Ark is a 55″, 1000R curved screen for HDR 10+ gaming, with a 165Hz refresh rate and 1ms response time. Described as a “personal gaming theatre” the Odyssey Ark comes with four speakers built into each corner and two centre woofers, resulting in a 60W 2.2.2 channel configuration, powered by Dolby Atmos.

Ramaz Studios, the LED production studio in use, offers a 4,500 sq ft virtual production film studio for hire, with P1.5mm LED filming displays for photo-realistic environments. The company says this offers a greater level of clarity than the P2.6mm LED cinematographers typically shoot with, so that users won’t be hampered by moiré effects.

VISUALAB Media, which produced the video, is a digital content creative agency with a specialisation in digital signage. Notable projects include a Bristol Airport security animation, a 3D fruit machine for iiyama that was seen at ISE 2022, branded content for a digital canvas at soft drinks giant Britvic, and video content for The Wall microLED at Samsung KX in London.
