“With technology becoming even more prevalent in our daily lives, it’s critical for leaders to understand that with exponential technology comes exponential responsibility” – Nuri Djavit, CMO of Singularity Group.

Singularity Group, a global impact organization that looks into the future to help leaders better understand how exponential technology will shape businesses and societies in the years ahead, today announced an international virtual screening of the award-winning documentary The Hacktivist. The virtual screening, which will take place on September 22, 2022 at 9 a.m. PST, will be followed by a 45-minute panel discussion featuring researcher, hacker and activist Andrew “bunnie” Huang alongside a diverse panel of participants.

Coming off the heels of an award-winning film festival circuit, The Hacktivist has altered viewer perceptions of the activism power of “hackers’. The short film documentary swept the 2022 film festival circuit, having garnered the following awards:

  • Official Selection at Science Film Festival 2022
  • Official Selection of the Kuala Lumpur International Film Festival in the Sky
  • Official Selection at New Jersey Documentary Film Festival
  • Official Selection at Milledgeville-Eatonton Film Festival
  • Finalist in The Raw Science Film Festival
  • World Film Carnival Outstanding Achievement Award (Documentary Film)
  • World Film Carnival Outstanding Achievement Award (Debut filmmaker)

Created in collaboration with Singapore-headquartered Wildtype Media Group — publisher of award-winning science and technology magazine Asian Scientist Magazine — The Hacktivist follows Andrew ‘bunnie’ Huang, a gray-hat hacker who rose to international fame in 2001 after clashing with tech giant Microsoft over his guide to modifying the Xbox. Today, Huang is suing the United States government to restore users’ rights to own and use their technology autonomously.

The 40-minute documentary, which was shot across the cities of Singapore, Boston and San Francisco at the height of a global pandemic, brings together different voices of the tech world, including: Ja-Naé Duane, behavioral scientist and faculty member at Singularity University, Lee Tien, senior staff attorney at Electronic Frontier Foundation, and Sean ‘xobs’ Cross, hacker and close collaborator of Huang.

“With technology becoming even more prevalent in our daily lives, it’s critical for leaders to understand that with exponential technology comes exponential responsibility,” says Nuri Djavit, CMO of Singularity Group. “As a global impact organization that helps leaders learn about and address the implications of technology, we felt the need to shed light on the debate over the ethics of hacking and the transparency between the hardware created by corporations and used by consumers.”

Moderated by Kyle Hermans, Co-Founder and CEO of Be Courageous, the 45-minute virtual panel will delve deeper into the documentary’s themes to decode the ethics and implications of hacker-activism (a.k.a. hacktivism). Panelists include bunnie, Singularity expert Ja-Naé Duane, hacker Sean ‘xobs’ Cross, and others. Following the panel, there will be a 15-minute audience Q&A.

“From credit cards to location trackers, consumers today completely entrust their lives to technology,” says Bambby Cheuk, producer of The Hacktivist. “We hope the documentary breaches the notion that big tech deserves trust while reminding viewers that we are active users, not passive consumers of technology.”
