Topps Brings Bundesliga NFTs to Avalanche

Trading card company didn’t pick Wax for this release

Trading card company Topps has picked the Avalanche blockchain to release their first collection of Bundesliga NFTs. The first NFTs based on the 2020-2021 German football competition launched this Wednesday.

Collectors can go to the Topps website to buy two different Bundesliga card packs. A standard pack with 5 cards costs $10, while the premium pack with 35 cards costs $85. The expensive pack also contains rarer cards.

What’s interesting about this NFT collection is that it’s about last season. The cards can portray video moments from last season’s matches in the Bundesliga, making the collection somewhat similar to NBA Top Shot.

Those familiar with Topps endeavours on the blockchain, will know that the trading card company normally works with Wax. Several NFT collections, including Garbage Pail Kids and Major League Baseball, have been issued on the Wax blockchain. That’s why the move to Avalanche, which launched its mainnet in March, is somewhat odd.

A variety of sports-related NFT projects have picked new blockchain alternatives to release their collections. Earlier this year Animoca Brands announced a football game coming to the Hedera blockchain. In addition, Ethernity will host an NFT collection dedicated to the Argentinian football star Lionel Messi, as well as a collection dedicated to boxing champion Manny Pacquiao.

Major League Baseball had some success on the Wax blockchain. NBA Top Shot has already seen $639 million in NFT trading on their marketplace. While fantasy football game Sorare has been performing solid this year as well, having now seen $97,5 million in NFT trading since their launch.
