Tower Tag Offers A Fresh Take On VR Esports

Grappling hook locomotion mechanics and room-scale technology help set this unique multiplayer shooter apart from the pack.

In a market saturated by VR shooters, standing out from the pack has become increasingly difficult for smaller developers. That said, Tower Tag, a new multiplayer experience from VR Nerds Studios, appears to be up for the challenge.

Available free on App Lab and SideQuest, Tower Tag is a unique team-based shooter that combines memorable locomotion mechanics with fast-paced gunplay to deliver a paintball-inspired PvP experience reminiscent of 90s futurism. Your objective is simple: navigate a variety of competitive environments while blasting your opponents using a futuristic laser pistol.

Teams of up to four players can go head-to-head across 10 different maps in three unique game modes: Team Deathmatch, Elimination, and Goal Tower.

Rather than teleporting or using a joystick to move around the environment, you instead use a high-powered grappling hook to propel yourself from tower to tower. You can physically move around each tower using room-scale to line up the best shot on your opponent or protect yourself from incoming fire. As a result, Tower Tag can get quite physical at times.

“The Meta Quest is a great platform and we are happy to now bring our game to a wider audience,” said Head of Project Management Chrisoph Spinger. “Still, the journey from arcades with powerful PCs to the Meta Quest required us to redevelop and rethink many things. But now we are on the home stretch and we are already looking forward to the feedback from the first players.”

Tower Tag is available for free on Meta Quest headsets via App Lab and SideQuest. The game was originally launched in 2020 on PC VR headsets via Steam where it’s currently rated ‘Very Positive’ by the community.
