France-based video game developer and publisher Ubisoft has formally announced its intention to develop play-to-earn non fungible token (NFT) and blockchain games during the Q2 earnings call last week.

According to the firm, it has been investigating blockchain games as early as 2018. However despite the recent announcement, the publisher’s plans remain vague to this day.

Ubisoft Chief Executive Officer Yves Guillemot stated that he believes that blockchain is “very attractive for the long term,” and the company is interested in creating digital economies.

“As you see, this industry is changing regularly with lots of new revolutions happening. We consider blockchain one of those revolutions. It will imply more play-to-earn that will enable more players to actually earn content, own content, and we think it’s going to grow the industry quite a lot,” Guillemot stated. The executive also noted that the company has been working with small companies on the blockchain and it is starting to have a good know-how on how it can impact the industry.

“We want to be one of the key players there,” the CEO added.

Moreover, Ubisoft Chief Financial Officer Frederick Duguet stated that the firm aims to employ a new method of monetization, which he refers to as play-to-earn.

“[Blockchain] will enable more play-to-earn that will enable more players to actually earn content, own content, and we think it’s going to grow the industry quite a lot. We’ve been working with lots of small companies going on blockchain and we’re starting to have a good know-how on how it can impact the industry, and we want to be one of the key players here,” Duguet stated. Additionally, Duguet said that the publisher is still in the early stages of exploring the technology, and that this of course includes “the impact on environments”.

On the other hand, according to its last month’s update on Steam distribution onboarding guidelines, Valve, video game developer, PC game store and mother company of Steam, bans all blockchain games that feature NFT or cryptocurrencies on its video game digital distribution service. While its rival, Epic Games stated that it is open to letting games that use blockchain technology and NFTs onto its PC store.
