Spraky, co-founder of Axie University and manager at Yield Guild Games (YGG), says that virtually everyone in Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija knows the play-to-earn non-fungible token (NFT) game Axie Infinity. He mentioned this during episode 2 of BitPinas’ weekly webcast.

“Dito sa Cabanatuan, big hit talaga yung Axie Infinity, dito sa area namin. Hindi lang sa Cabanatuan in particular, pati sa buong Nueva Ecija.” he stated.

(Translation: Axie Infinity is definitely a big hit here in Cabanatuan, especially in our area. Actually, not only in Cabanatuan in particular but the whole of Nueva Ecija.)

He noted that the game’s popularity may have actually started when the article from Leah Callon-Butler, columnist for major crypto news publication Coindesk and director of consultancy firm Emfarsis, came out.

Spraky, along with his co-founders in Axie University, were previously featured in a documentary by Leah Callon-Butler, together with Emfarsis’ principal consultant Nathan Small. BitPinas interviewed the Axie University co-founders tukaj.

“Kahit sinong tanungin mo rito, kung hindi sila nag aaxie meron silang kakilalang nag aaxie. Ganoon kalaki.” Spraky said.

(Translation: Whoever you ask here about Axie Infinity, it’s either they’ll answer that they are a player or they know someone who plays. It’s just that big.)

Spraky also noted the difference in Axie familiarity in other places he visited in the country, such as in Manila, Boracay, and Cebu. Whereas everyone in Cabanatuan knows Axie and the ins and outs of it, when he tried asking people in the aforementioned places if they know Axie, they only have a slight idea about it.

“Nakakatuwa rin na malaki na yung community namin dito (sa Cabanatuan).” He noted.

(Translation: It’s uplifting that our community has gotten bigger here in Cabanatuan.)

He looked back and said that their guild, Axie University, started last year in November with only 4 scholars. Their scholarship program has the sharing model of 70-30, 70% for the scholar then 30% for them. Spraky also mentioned that they now currently have affiliates that run their own scholarship programs. 

He also highlighted that one of his pioneering scholars, Macky, also part of the documentary, never expected anything big but when Smooth Love Potion (SLP) pumped, the former tricycle driver displaced by the pandemic was able to build a house for his family. 

When asked about the volatility of the price of SLP. Spraky stated that these price changes are to be expected.

“At the end of the day, it’s still a game meant to be played.” He added.

The Philippines is a core market of Axie Infinity. It has been well-documented how many people in the country have gone to play the game to augment their income during the pandemic, when many were left jobless.
