The Indonesian Central Bank joined the efforts of global central banks to launch a digital rupiah currency and the governor Perry Warjiyo confirmed the rumors, informing that the bank is yet to decide which platform will be used. During the COVID pandemic, Indonesia saw a huge boom in digital transactions and now the country plans to enhance its efforts towards cashless transfers by launching a central bank digital currency. The governor asserted that a CBDC is on its way but there was no date set for the project’s completion:
“BI plans in the future to issue a central bank digital currency, digital rupiah…as a legal digital payment instrument in Indonesia.”
He added that the institution is exploring how the digital rupiah will fulfill the goal of monetary policy and payment systems while also determining the abilities of the financial infrastructure:

“We’re also, of course, considering our options on the technology that we will use.”
The rupiah is the only legally accepted currency for payments in the country and the nation’s central bank will conduct the upcoming CBDC in the same way that it treats banknotes and card-based transactions. The biggest economy in Southeast Asia got a huge rise in crypto users in the past few months after the recent rally of the most digital assets and as per the reports by indodax, the exchange registered more than 700 000 new members for the first few months in 2021 while the total number increased to three million.
However, the country’s officials contemplated a new plan to tax trading with BTC and other altcoins, and a spokesman for the tax office in Indonesia, Neilmaldrin Noor stated that the future implementations are still at a discussion phase and there are no changes that have been administered:
”Pomembno je vedeti, da ... če je s transakcijo ustvarjen dobiček ali kapitalski dobiček, je dobiček predmet dohodnine. Torej mora davčni zavezanec, ki prejme kapitalski dobiček, plačati davek in ga prijaviti. "
