  • Google Play Store has announced it will allow NFT games from video game developers
  • Google also insisted they will not allow NFT games that participate in gambling
  • This was announced by Google play store group product manager Joseph Mills in a blog post

Google Play Store will now allow video game publishers to sell nonfungible token (NFT) games in its store. This is according to a recent blog post by Joseph Mills, the group product manager. This update opens up new possibilities for blockchain-based digital content transactions within apps and games on Google Play. Mills expresses Google Play’s satisfaction in sharing this news and highlights the potential of NFT rewards to enhance user loyalty.

It is worth noting that Google Play had previously banned crypto mining apps from its store back in 2018. In 2020, they also removed the Bitcoin Blast video game due to “deceptive practices.” On the other hand, Apple’s App Store took a stance in October. Apple stated that NFTs purchased outside of the App Store should not provide any special benefits to users in a game; otherwise, the game would be banned. Additionally, NFTs sold through the App Store version of a game are subject to a 30% fee to Apple.

These actions and statements led many industry experts to believe that mobile NFT games were facing significant challenges. However, Google Play’s new policy makes it clear that NFT games are welcome on Android devices, as long as they adhere to certain rules and guidelines.

According to the blog post, developers must be transparent about whether a game allows users to earn or buy NFTs or cryptocurrencies. Furthermore, they are prohibited from glamorizing potential earnings from playing or trading activities. The sale of loot boxes or any form of gambling for players is also not allowed.

As long as developers comply with these guidelines, they can offer tokenized assets as part of the gaming experience. This can include reimagining traditional games with user-owned content, as mentioned in the blog post. Google Play emphasizes that these guidelines were established in collaboration with leaders in Web3 gaming, and they plan to maintain an ongoing dialogue with developers to understand their challenges and opportunities.

It is worth mentioning that Steam, the world’s largest PC game distributor, has previously banned Web3 games. However, Epic Games, one of Steam’s competitors, took a different approach and recently launched the NFT card game Gods Unchained in its store on June 22.

In conclusion, Google Play has made a significant update to its policies, allowing video game publishers to sell NFT games on the platform. This decision opens up new avenues for blockchain-based transactions and rewards within apps and games. While certain rules and guidelines must be followed, Google Play aims to support developers in integrating NFTs into their gaming experiences. This announcement signifies a positive step for the NFT gaming industry, contrasting with restrictions imposed by other platforms.
