This Thursday, June 30th, marks the end of Elizabeth Bradley’s 2-year term as Chair of the Consorzio Comunità Informatica (CCC), and marks the beginning of her 1-year term as the Chair Emerita. Bradley has been an active member of the CCC since 2012. Her contributions to the community in the past decade are immense, we will share just a few here:
In the summer of 2018, the CCC realized a need for broad community engagement and input on research opportunities and challenges in artificial intelligence. Led by Bradley, the CCC reached out to AAAA, a natural partner for the effort, and began the work that would culminate in A 20-Year Community Roadmap for Artificial Intelligence Research, impacting new programs for artificial intelligence research throughout several federal agencies and the broader community.
In 2020, the CCC relaunched the Programma CIFellows, which aims to provide academic research positions to PhD graduates during times of economic unrest. Bradley was instrumental in not only jump-starting the program, but seeing it to realization for two cohorts of postdocs in computing.
Bradley has also served on several task forces and led efforts across the computing spectrum: from leading the white paper Ricerca informatica per la crisi climatica to the quadrennial paper Informatica pandemica: preparazione, robustezza e resilienza and their subsequent addendums She was featured on episode 22 and 23 of the Podcast sull'informatica catalizzatrice discussing her work on nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory.
At this time, we would also like to thank the CCC Council members whose terms expire on June 30th for their dedication to the CCC and to bettering the computing community for themselves and those to come.
Elisa Bertin has been an active member of the security task forces since she first joined the Council in 2019. Over the years, she has provided invaluable insight for carte quadriennali, rapporti di officinae fogli bianchi, on diverse topics such as Artificial Intelligence, 5G Privacy and Security, and Big Data. We would like to thank Elisa for all of her contributions to the community and the Council, and to wish her luck with her new role as Vice President of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACCM).
--Ian Foster has been a dynamic member of the hardware task forces while on the Council, also contributing to many AI efforts. His work as the lead author on the National Discovery Cloud whitepaper has led to several new initiatives in the community.
Chad Jenkins has engaged with all things artificial intelligence and robotics based while on the Council. He has also been a staunch supporter of all programs engaging the broad community, such as CIFellows and CRA-WP programs on Broadening Participation.
Melanie Mitchell ha guidato il Artificial Intelligence working group, providing key insights as AI permeates new and different avenues across the broad research ecosystem. She was also featured on episode 15 and 16 of the Podcast sull'informatica catalizzatrice, during which she discussed developing the software copione and authoring her most recent book, Intelligenza artificiale: una guida per pensare gli esseri umani.
