Cryptocurrencies have evolved from being a sketchy and shady type of currencies to be one of the fastest-rising innovations of the year, and their usage and advantages keep on expanding every day.
A Yemen citizen posted his story on Reddit about the advantages of using cryptocurrencies to buy food packages for families in the country. This charitable act is a true heaven-sent as citizens are currently suffering from the ongoing civil war in the country.
The citizen, with a Reddit username ”yemenvoice”, said that he has raised around $12,000 worth of crypto donations which would be used to fight starvation in the country.
The user claims that 15 families have so far been provided with rice, flour, beans, and oil and aims to reach 30 families soon.
Crypto as a lifeline
“I have tried very hard to help my people by finding any possible way. I have tried to set up online donation campaigns, but unfortunately, all online donation platforms do not support Yemen. So, I thought of using cryptocurrencies as an alternative method, and indeed it was much easier and more effective,” Yemenvoice said.
The country’s civil war began way back in 2014, followed by a Saudi Arabian-led coalition of forces responding to a request for assistance from ousted President Abd-Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.
Yemen has been the subject of a blockade by land, air, and sea since March 2016, depriving millions of citizens of their basic needs, especially of food.
16 million people in starvation
In data released by the United Nations World Food Programme, 16 million people in Yemen are currently suffering from hunger, including 400,000 children.
Yemenvoice said that using cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Dogecoin, Ether, Bitcoin Cash, and Nano has been and are still a great help in providing basic necessities to the families caught in the ongoing conflict.
