Multiple attendees of ApeFest, a closed event exclusively accessible to holders of Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC), report they were admitted to hospital after being exposed to extreme ultraviolet lumination at last weekend’s event in Hong Kong.

On Nov. 5, Twitter was flooded with reports of eye and skin injuries from ApeFest attendees, with many guests seeking medical attention at local hospitals after suffering sustained exposure to ultraviolet (UV) lighting at the event.

“To all my friends who suffer now: go get your eyes checked,” said Adrian Zdunczyk of YellowBlock. “You’ve likely most literally got your eyes burnt with UV like I did, which requires medications, eye drops, eye protection, antibiotics and specialist care. Don’t ignore this health hazard. Without proper treatment, it may cause long lasting vision impairment and other serious damage.”

Yuga’s violent optometrical mishap comes after the company announced it would undergo a major restructuring twice last month.

In early October, the company said it would eliminate several positions and strategically pivot to focus on its metaverse project, Otherside. Roughly two weeks later, the Yuga Labs reaffirmed its newfoundland metaverse focus, also emphasizing “supporting existing communities” and “leveraging partnerships with established brands” as top priorities moving forward, and promising to devote more resources to the community for CryptoPunks.

The news followed a protracted downturn for projects within Yuga Labs’ portfolio. The floor price for top Yuga collections including BAYC, MAYC, and Otherside each crashed more than 85% since April 2022, according to NFT Price Floor.

CryptoPunk community members have also criticized Yuga Labs for neglecting the project after purchasing it in March 2022. The floor price for CryptPunks is down 45% since the March 11 purchase.

Yuga Labs is now looking to generate good will in the NFT community.

On Nov. 4, Yuga Labs announced it was teaming up with Magic Eden, a popular NFT marketplace, to launch a trading platform for non-fungibles contractually enforcing royalty payouts for creators. Yuga said the marketplace will launch before the start of the year.

NFT payouts emerged as a hot-button issue amid the recent NFT bear market. The news comes after OpenSea, the recently deposed former leading NFT marketplace, made creator royalties optional from August of this year.
