The shock of the attack was so severe that four people remained hidden in a broom cupboard on the ground floor and were in terror for hours as the police noted. The Law enforcement agents were fast to react and they arrived only about 30 minutes after the attacker. Once he saw the police arriving, the criminal initiated contact and demanded $226 million in digital assets to release the hostage. He was also wearing a jacket designed to look like a bomb according to eyewitnesses. He threatened a hostage with a gun and said he would blow himself up so the police took it very seriously.

The gunman asked for water by 10:30 p.m which the police officers delivered by a robot. Once he left the shop to pick it up, the hostage took the opportunity and ran off but the law enforcement reacted quickly and caught him with their car. Knocked on the ground, he was taken to hospital in poor health condition and was treated for serious injuries. The hostage and the rest of the people inside the store were unharmed as the police chief Frank Pauw praised the courage of the people involved but especially from the British man:

“The hostage played a heroic role by forcing a breakthrough. Otherwise, this could have been a long night.”
