As early as 2014, Bitcoin is showing significant signs that it can potentially bring a revolution to the world’s financial system.
But at that time, almost nobody was interested in Bitcoin, the first ones who noticed its potential were the researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). They were one of the first advocates of the crypto and conducted social tests, and other PR events to spread awareness on Bitcoin.
The researchers want to prove that Bitcoins have a big potential to function as a digital currency which, fast forward today, turns out to be true.
More aware
Peter van der Mejide, the co-founder of BitKassa and Arnhem Bitcoin City, said that merchants around the world are more aware (and interested) of Bitcoin today compared to 2014. At that time, Bitcoin seemed to be an unusual concept and had a reputation for being used in illegal activities.
But today, more and more people, including merchants, are seeing Bitcoin as a viable payment tool and investment. Their respect for digital currency has increased significantly.
“Now, it is a completely different scenario than in 2014. Some of the merchants we talk to have Bitcoin already or ask about it out of curiosity,” Mejide said.
The Netherland’s crypto scene
Bitcoin’s influence has been spreading rapidly in various parts of the globe, but in The Netherlands, it seems that the citizens aren’t yet ready to jump into BTC.
The slow adoption of Bitcoin in the country says a lot about the citizens’ appetite for crypto, and unlike other nations that are quickly embracing cryptos, the country seems to be standing on the cautious side.
Mejide said that Bitcoin enthusiasts and technical people are the only ones who are actively using BTC in the country. He added that everyone else has been comfortable with the country’s already efficient card payment infrastructure.
