President of FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta revealed plans for NFTs and metaverse as part of its strategy to expand fan engagement across the globe. FC Barcelona’s Foray Into Metaverse Speaking during a keynote speech at Mobile World Congress, FC Barcelona President Joan Laporta talked about the football club’s plans to develop its own cryptocurrency and its own metaverse. “We want to create our own cryptocurrency and we have to do that ourselves. We are different because we survive financially from what we can generate through the industry of sport,” Laporta said in his keynote speech. However, it remains unclear as to what purpose the football token would be exactly used for on whether it will be a form of fan token similar to those offered by Socios or a means of payment for tickets and merchandise. In addition, Laporta further revealed that the club will also launch its very own non-fungible tokens (NFT) collections in the near future, following plans initially announced in November 2021. “In recent times there has been a lot of attention to blockchain products and services such as NFTs and metaverse. We should be able to offer digital products to our members, our fans that will align with the value of the club and generate a very interesting emotional experience,” Laporta added. First Football Club to Launch Fan Token FC Barcelona was one of the first football clubs to launch their own fan token with Chiliz. The move led dozens of football clubs across the globe to follow suit. The club already embraces virtual and augmented reality for fan experiences at its Camp Nou stadium. The project proved to be a huge success, given the travel restrictions during the last two years.
