I guess you are aware of a new development coming out of Australia. In a recent speech, Chief Minister Michael Gunner announces tougher restrictions related to vaccinations and COVID-19.

Now I’m not a doctor or an epidemiologist, nor do I aspire to be one. I’ll leave the science to the experts. But this recent developments highlights how quickly democratic societies have eroded personal freedoms and individual liberties.

Australia has literally introduced a “freedom pass.”

As the philosopher John Stuart Mill said, “the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

I remember a few people in the corners of the internet pontificating about a freedom pass last year. They were largely ignored and labelled as conspiracy theorists. Frankly, it was difficult to see how societies that boast about their freedom could make such a drastic 180 degree change. But here we are.

The ideas of freedom are the bedrock of democratic societies. When I saw this video, I immediately had a few quotes pop into my head:

“When government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny.” – Thomas Jefferson

“People shouldn’t be afraid of their government. Governments should be afraid of their people.” – Alan Moore, V for Vendetta

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” – John Stuart Mill

“The only real prison is fear and the only real freedom is freedom from fear.” – Aung San Suu Kyi

“We must be free not because we claim freedom, but because we practice it.” – William Faulkner

“Is freedom anything else than the right to live as we wish? Nothing else.” – Epictetus

We are living in a weird world. It seems like the degradation of freedom has become normalized. Some people are willing to stand up and say something. Others choose to go about their daily lives. But the trend doesn’t seem to be heading in the right direction.

There isn’t much more to say on this topic. My apologies in advance for diverting the content of this letter for a day, but the ethos of a decentralized, digital currency that returns freedom and sovereignty to individuals is fundamentally at odds with these overt steps to restrict individual liberties.
