Popular social media platform Twitter has been shaking things up since their takeover by an Elon Musk-led consortium of investors. While many of their moves haven’t been received warmly, the latest one will attract the eye of the finance and crypto community on Twitter (FinTwitter). Now you can search for charts of the leading stocks, Exchange Traded Funds and Cryptocurrencies within Twitter.

This brings the convenience of price charts within Twitter. Users no longer need to visit alternative websites like Trading View to view securities performance. One can find the chart by searching for the security or asset in the search bar.  Searching with or without a dollar sign ($BTC or BTC) returns the same result.

The function can also be accessed by clicking a tweet tagging the code with a dollar sign in front ($AAPL). This brings convenience and smoothness to the crypto and stocks community that resides within Twitter. Quicker access to essential data makes for an easier time passing on information. Enthusiasts and promoters alike will be happy with the move.

We saw Google recently enabled viewing of Ethereum wallet balances via Google search. Integrating cryptos into a social media function for mainstream financial products such as stocks and ETFs significantly boosts crypto’s profile in the finance world.

The Elon Musk effect on Twitter

Elon Musk is one of the most celebrated figures in the business world. Crypto enthusiasts are particularly fond of Musk because of his involvement with and backing meme-coin Dogecoin (DOGE). He has been affectionately nicknamed the Dogefather. One can quickly gather that the inclusion of crypto amongst the financial charts function on Twitter may have more to do with Musk’s taking the helm at Twitter than not.

How to see crypto charts on Twitter

You can find available stock charts by typing the ticker of the asset you would like to see in the search bar. You can include the $ tag or exclude it. The function will return the result either way. We understand that the function is still being rolled out, and more symbols are being added. We tried the few we could think of and found that many worked already. The screenshots below show our attempts.

You can also click on a ticker symbol within a tweet posted by another user or yourself when it is tagged with a $. This function does not apply to the ordinary hashtag (#) symbols but only to those prefaced with the $ tag.  The charts are all  24-hour charts by default, with no ability to adjust the period in view.

Win/win for Twitter and Crypto

This is one of those cases where the chicken and egg problem makes a perfect analogy. Twitter, while one of the most relevant social media platforms in the world, has struggled to find a way to monetize the service effectively. All the while, other social media platforms like Meta’s Facebook and Instagram or TikTok have found effective monetization models.

Cryptocurrency has been riding a growing fanfare that has only been tempered by the harsh crypto winter, which has seen large market capitalization wiped off the crypto world. In fairness, the winter extends beyond crypto; traditional capital markets worldwide have suffered a similar impact in the last 12 months. This has taken the wind out of the crypto ship’s sails and brought considerable to its credibility among the general public.

It’s hard to say which side gets a better deal out of this arrangement. Through improved access to information on one of the world’s biggest social media platforms or Twitter, Crypto further cements its relevance to both the worlds of Crypto and Traditional Finance.

At the time of writing, we were able to see charts for Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Gold (BTG), Ether (ETH), Dogecoin (DOGE), Shiba Inu Coin (SHIB), Cardano (ADA), Solana (SOL), Ripple (XRP),  Filecoin (FIL), Decentraland (MANA), The Basic Attention Token (Bat) and Tether (USDT). Our searches for Binance Chain (BNB) and Bit Torrent Token (BTT) failed to return charts.
