Benjamin Franklin wanted to highlight the monetary cost of laziness here. He points out that when a person is paid for the time he or she spends working, minimizing the amount of time lost also minimizes the amount of money that is lost to less frivolous activities.

This mentality seems to me to be a must in today’s monetary and financial system in which the value of fiat currencies keeps falling over time. Thus, the purchasing power of $1,000 in 1971 does not even represent $150 in 2021. The great monetary inflation that we have experienced since Richard Nixon established the current system in August 1971 is proof that time is money in this system.

The current system forces you to invest your money in assets whose return beats the effects of inflation or to work more and more. This system puts you in slavery. You are not free to save the fruits of your labor, but also to enjoy them as you wish.

However, you must understand that in life, time is the most precious resource you have at your disposal.
