The NFT industry has been “rocked” recently by another NFT purchase with sky-high prices. While other minted digital artworks are bought for their aesthetic beauty, this NFT collection isn’t eye candy at all. In fact, this collection is nothing but a bunch of digital rocks!
Meet the EtherRocks, also known as ETHRocks. These rocks, which are gaining a lot of attention in social media, aren’t actually freshly minted rocks. In fact, they are as old as CryptoPunks, which is considered one of the world’s oldest NFT collections.
ETHRocks was created in 2017 and was launched in December of the same year, but it is only this year that it got overwhelming attention.
EtherRock (and roll)
The popular rocks are digital assets that were tokenized on the Ethereum blockchain. The digital images consist of still images of a rock. They are all identical in design but differ in shape and color tones. There are only 100 ETHRocks, which makes them really valuable.
The inspiration behind ETHRocks was the popular toy back in the 1970s called “PetRock”, which is a smoothly shaped rock bought by people as a zero-maintenance pet. And the trend has been resurrected again, now, in a digital form, and with a more unbelievable behavior from people.
Astronomical prices
When the first ETHRock was sold, it only cost the buyer $300 to purchase it. But fast forward to 2021, with cryptos, blockchains, and NFTs, being at people’s top interests, the price of ETHRocks has gone unbelievably high.
Today, ETH rocks are selling for either $104,000, $132,240, $612,000, $714,000, and $837,000, prices that are miles away from its original $300 valuation.
But these steep price tags are nothing compared to some ETHRocks that sell for $2.1 billion each! And yes, these outrageously priced digital rocks are being bought!
