LayerZero Taps Google Cloud Oracle For Message Verification

LayerZero Taps Google Cloud Oracle For Message Verification

LayerZero, a popular cross-chain interoperability protocol, has added support for the Google Cloud oracle, which is now available to all LayerZero-based applications and will become the protocol’s default configuration on Sept. 19.

“Every message within LayerZero will leverage the secure infrastructure run by one of the most security-minded organizations in the entire world,” LayerZero said. “Put another way, Google Cloud will verify the validity of every message within LayerZero by default.”

The news comes as Google Cloud is steadily expanding its web3 footprint.

The company launched its Blockchain Node Engine in October of last year, initially offering node management services for Ethereum validators before expanding the product to support other Proof of Stake blockchains. Google Cloud also teamed up with OKX to co-host a web3 hackathon in April of this year.

Parent company Google has also been making moves to embrace web3. In July, Google updated the terms of service for its Play Store to support blockchain-based in-app content, including NFTs and secondary markets.

Team Member Quashes Airdrop Rumors

On the same day, a video surfaced of LayerZero team member, Robert Collura, appearing to shoot down expectations of a forthcoming LayerZero airdrop during the Permissionless II conference.

“There’s no airdrop, guys, no airdrop coming,” Collura said in the eight-second video. “There are lots of rumors, but there’s no airdrop coming.”

However, LayerZero CEO Bryan Pellegrino responded to the video on X, claiming that the comments were taken out of context.

“Context is around announcement tomorrow, i.e. all the hidden hashes [at] Permissionless,” Pellegrino tweeted.

That’s undoubtedly a welcome relief for the over 3M users that have pushed more than 60M transactions on LayerZero hoping for a future airdrop.
