New WhatsApp Feature Adds VPN Protection For Calls

WhatsApp, a popular instant messaging tool, is getting built-in VPN protection during your calls.

It works by rerouting your information through a separate server, working very similarly to a VPN. It works by wrapping your data through a layer of military-grade encryption, which can’t be decrypted, even by a supercomputer.

This means that your ISP address won’t be detectable while you’re talking to someone. WhatsApp has said it will make it harder for people to obtain your location during phone calls — this helps against criminals or telemarketers who attempt to pry information out of you just by answering their calls.

The feature isn’t currently available, but it’s undergoing beta testing for its iOS app. The new feature is currently a toggleable option you can find in the You tab on the bottom right. It’s incredibly easy to use and can be turned on and off at will.

It does come with one notable drawback. The company has stated that it will decrease your call quality. If you already struggle to maintain a good connection for any reason, you may not be able to fully take advantage of this new feature.

After the feature releases, it’s best to test it for yourself and make sure your connection quality is acceptable.

This new feature will be available in version 2.23.18.15, according to a report by WEBetainfo. If you don’t have automatic downloads enabled on your device, make sure you manually update it after the full feature is released.

“After installing the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.18.15 update from the Google Play Store,” the researchers write, “we discovered that WhatsApp is developing a privacy call relay feature, and it will be available in a future update of the app!”
