New York Mayor Elect Eric Adams Wants Crypto Taught In Schools

The upcoming New York Mayor Eric Adams thinks that schools should be preparing to learn crypto so they can become able to navigate the world of crypto and digital assets. In today’s latest cryptocurrency news, we are taking a closer look at his idea.

New York Mayor Elect Eric Adams seems to be doubling down on his pro-crypto stance and asserted that the schools should incorporate crypto studies into their curriculum. Adams described crypto as a new way of paying for goods and services and even urged local schools to equip students for the new way of thinking that is brought on by blockchain technology and digital assets:

“We must open our schools to teach the technology, to teach this new way of thinking.”

Adams also noted a low awareness of crypto among his younger opponents and he said:

“When I talked about blockchain and Bitcoins, young people on the street stopped and asked me, ‘What is that?’”

He also indicated plans to encourage New York Businesses to start accepting Bitcoin and other crypto-assets as a form of payment saying that he will really get it right this time. The mayor-elect added that New York has to remain a center of innovation no matter what that innovation is. Adams’ comments were met with mixed reactions from the crypto community on social media and users stated that these crypto studies have to become incorporated into school curriculums so the new investors will get equipped with an open mind and a lot of knwoledge before entering the crypto space.

Others criticized his proposition with one user saying crypto is speculative garbage and schools should be focused on teaching science, history, math, and language first. Invoking recent criticism of Adams from Harvard economist Jason Furman, another Twitter user described the mayor’s excitement for crypto as “kind of grifty” given Adam’s intention to receive his first three paychecks in the form of BTC:

“I really like Eric Adams but I don’t think his job description is pumping up a crypto-currency that [he] is about to be paid in. It seems kind of grifty.”

The incoming mayor’s policy platform includes transforming the city into a US crypto hub and also said that he plans to explore setting up a city crypto coin in New York. The city will not be the first one that will implement a study program like crypto. Georgia has already been calling for state education officials to implement the financial literacy program including crypto in the books.
