The National Hockey League (NHL) has officially launched NHL Breakaway, an NFT collectibles platform created in collaboration with the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA), National Hockey League Alumni Association (NHLAA), and crypto startup Sweet.

“We’ve been committed to developing digital collectibles designed and customized for the NHL and wholly focused on connecting with hockey fans in the most authentic and engaging manner possible,” said David Lehanski, NHL Executive Vice President of Business Development & Innovation, in a statement.

The platform lets fans collect, gift, trade, and display digital collectibles of NHL highlights. Features include a Trade Lounge for collectors to interact, public profiles to showcase fandom, and gamification through challenges to earn real-life rewards.

As with platforms like Dapper Labs’ officially licensed NBA Top Shot and NFL All Day, NHL Breakaway will base its collectibles on real video highlights from the league, including multiple camera angles and audio components.

NHL Breakaway’s collectibles are minted on Polygon, an Ethereum scaling network. The platform first opened in beta to early adopters earlier this year, but now is launching to the public.

Currently, NHL Breakaway is offering a Series 1 starter pack that contains six NFT collectibles, priced at $19 for the pack. A total of 5,000 of the Series 1 packs are available, and the set contains collectible moments from players like Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews, and Alexander Ovechkin.
