Norton's AI-Powered Genie Software Aims to Outsmart Online Scammers

In a bid to combat the rising tide of online scams, Norton, a renowned cybersecurity company, has unveiled its innovative Genie software. The app, currently in its early access phase and available on both Apple’s app store and Norton’s website, utilizes cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) to swiftly assess the content of emails, text messages, websites, and social media posts for potential scams.

“Genie is an always-on, easy-to-use, trusted advisor that helps you stay ahead of highly convincing scams,” said Ondrej Vlcek, president at Gen, Norton’s parent company. “By bringing together best-in-class scam intel from Norton with advanced AI, we can empower people to take full advantage of the digital world safely, privately, and confidently.”

Genie offers users a rapid means to compare the contents of suspicious messages to the vast database of samples collected by Norton’s cybersecurity operations. The AI evaluates the likelihood of a message being a scam or potentially suspicious and provides users with advice on the appropriate course of action.

Sahil Pruthi, principal product manager for Gen, stressed the importance of immediate answers in the face of potential scams.

“If you think you’re being scammed you should not have to call your friend, your brother, you should be able to have that answer at your fingertips and within seconds,” Pruthi said.

Despite acknowledging Genie’s current imperfections, Pruthi expressed the commitment of its creators to achieve perfection. The AI’s accuracy is expected to improve continuously as it learns from messages uploaded by its users — the more you use it, the smarter it gets. Currently boasting an accuracy rate of 80% to 90%, the developers aspire to reach a flawless 100%.

With Genie learning from user interactions, it is poised to become an invaluable resource in the ongoing battle against online scams, ultimately empowering individuals to navigate the digital realm securely and confidently.
