SI NFT Tickets, the ticketing division of the iconic United States sports magazine, initially launched in the NFT space with its “Box Office” platform almost a year ago. Operated on the Polygon blockchain, the service offered exclusive benefits to event attendees, from expedited entry to post-event content. However, the evolution did not pause there.

SI Tickets announced a notable pivot on February 20th. Sports Illustrated announced a partnership with Ava Labs, whose expertise in running the Avalanche network will provide a robust framework for “Box Office” to mint NFT tickets. This partnership aims to transform traditional event tickets into engaging digital experiences that interact with event participants in new and exciting ways.

The NFT ticketing platform’s journey, which began on Polygon, sought to enrich the event experience for organizers and attendees alike. Guests enjoyed perks such as drink vouchers, early access to music downloads, and exclusive post-event video content directly linked to their innovative NFT ticket.

SI Tickets CEO David Lane sheds light on the intrinsic value of this digital leap. He points out that traditional physical or QR-coded tickets lose their purpose once an event is over, tossed aside, and forgotten. NFTs revolutionize this narrative. By embracing blockchain technology, tickets transcend their one-time use, fostering deeper connections between event stakeholders and participants through the event ticket itself.

It’s worth noting that despite the shared name, Sports Illustrated Tickets operates independently of the magazine, leasing the brand to further its reach in the secondary ticket market. Since its inception, the Box Office has issued approximately 300,000 tickets and continues to grow in capacity and innovation.

NFT tickets provide event attendees exclusive benefits that surpass the traditional entry access offered by paper or electronic tickets. These benefits transform the event experience and can include:

Attendees truly own their NFT tickets, allowing them to keep them as collectables that may be appreciated over time, particularly for landmark events or rare experiences.

The journey from Polygon to Avalanche could have been more impromptu. Ava Labs had been in discussions with SI NFT Tickets since the platform’s early days. However, as John Nahas, Ava Labs’ senior vice president of business development, notes, the advancements and promises delivered by Avalanche’s technology proved persuasive enough for SI Tickets to switch allegiance.

Ava Labs isn’t new to the NFT ticketing scene, signalling its belief in its expansive potential through investments in other Web3 ticketing ventures. Their partnership with SI NFT Tickets and other ticketing platforms, like the South Korean Dreamus, exemplifies their commitment to redefining the ticketing experience using blockchain technology.

The blending of the world of Web3 with live events is making it evident that a more enduring and engaging alternative, the NFT ticket, is challenging the era of traditional ticketing with barcodes and paper slips.
