Sony Focuses on 3D Content Creation with Their Latest Device

Sony Corporation has announced the development of an immersive spatial content creation system to support creators in sophisticated 3D content creation. The system includes an XR head-mounted display with high-quality 4K OLED microdisplays.

Sony has immersed itself in virtual reality with the PlayStation VR 2. However, it seems that’s not enough for the company, as they will be venturing into the mixed reality medium too. They just revealed a headset at CES 2024 that focuses on an immersive spatial content-creating system.

The company plans to collaborate with developers of various 3D production software in the entertainment and industrial design fields. The firm is reportedly tapping Siemens to announce the Siemens Xcelerator open digital business platform.

Per Yoshinori Matsumoto, the executive deputy president, Sony is focusing on empowering creators with technologies and in the field of spatial content creation. According to a recent update, he states:

“By combining our technologies and Siemens’ expertise in engineering, we are excited to enable more immersive engineering that redefines the daily workflow of designers and engineers.”

He believes that the high-quality, realistic rendering and intuitive interaction will give creators tools to pursue more immersive creative processes that fuel further development in the industrial metaverse.

The company and its partners will announce the full specifications of the device. Other details, including the launch date and regions, pricing, sales channel, and software compatibility, will be announced, while the system will be available later in 2024.

Interestingly, this device comes with a pair of controllers that are designed for interacting with 3D objects and also for precise pointing. The headset also sports 4K OLED Microdisplays and has a video see-through function, just like the PSVR 2.

The device’s controllers have a ring controller made to manipulate objects freely in the virtual space. With this, users can create real-scale 3D models, see them in an extended reality environment, and also modify them.

Also, the device affords users the option of using a keyboard and mouse in the virtual space.

The Snapdragon XR2+ platform powers the device and also helps power the 1.3-type OLED Microdisplays that have a 4K resolution. It also has a wide DCI-P3 color gamut of 96%.

Creators can easily use the device’s flip-up mechanism to transition between physical and virtual spaces without having to recalibrate the device.

Equipped with an XR head-mounted display with 4K OLED Microdisplays Sony’s proprietary rendering technology, the content creation system enables real-time and realistic rendering. It renders the textures of 3D objects and the facial expressions of human characters.

With this system, creators will not only be able to see real-scale 3D models in an extended reality (XR) environment but also modify 3D models in it.

The device supports remote, real-time review between locations through integration with third-party 3D creation applications. This makes the device an intuitive and immersive tool for the entire process of spatial content creation.

The device has the latest XR processor by Qualcomm Technologies, which is the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 Platform. This processor has the power of the 4K OLED Microdisplays to deliver image quality and provides user and space tracking for seamless XR experiences.
