A federal judge has moved to unseal the names of two of Sam Bankman-Fried’s mystery bail guarantors.

District Judge Lewis Kaplan ruled in favour of a coalition of news organizations that petitioned for the names of Bankman-Fried’s $250 million bond co-signers to be made public, CoinDesk reported on Wednesday.

Former Stanford University Law School Dean Larry Kramer was one of the signers, putting up $500,000 towards the bond. Stanford’s senior research scientist Andreas Paepcke was the other signer, who put up $200,000.

Kramer said his decision was motivated solely by his close friendship with Bankman-Fried’s parents, Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried. He said he did not have any business dealings or interest in the matter besides his personal decision to help his friends.

“Joe Bankman and Barbara Fried have been close friends of my wife and I since the mid-1990s. During the past two years, while my family faced a harrowing battle with cancer, they have been the truest of friends – bringing food, providing moral support and frequently stepping in at moment’s notice to help. In turn, we have sought to support them as they face their own crisis,” said Kramer in a statement to CoinDesk.

Bankman-Fried’s legal counsel had initially stated their intent to appeal the court’s decision to unseal the names of these individuals but did not end up filing it according to court documents filed on Feb. 15.

In a letter filed on Jan. 3, the former FTX CEO’s lawyers requested the court to keep the names of the two mystery bond co-signers redacted on the grounds that they could be subject to harassment from the public – something they claim Bankman-Fried’s parents, known co-signers of his bond, were subject to following his bail being granted.

“Among other things, Mr. Bankman-Fried’s parents have received a steady stream of threatening correspondence, including communications expressing a desire that they suffer physical harm,” said attorney Mark Cohen at the time.
