A new mod introduces motion-controlled lightsabers and gesture-based Force abilities.
You can now play LucasArt’s popular 2002 first-and-third-person adventure game, Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast in VR on Meta Quest and Pico 4 headsets thanks to a new port from Team Beef, the same development team behind popular VR ports and mods for iconic games such as DOOM and Quake.
The JK XR – Jedi Knight II: Outcast VR Port was built using OpenXR and, based on the trailer, faithfully recreates the original Force-driven experience. The game even features full motion-controlled lightsabers, gesture-based saber throws, collision-based laser deflections, and gestured-based Force abilities.
The following is a more comprehensive list of features (as provided by Team Beef):
- “New fully-modeled VR weapons.
- Full motion-controlled lightsaber.
- Real collision-based laser deflections.
- VR weapon/Force wheels.
- Gesture-based use/interact.
- Gesture-based Force actions (push, pull, and grab).
- Weapon scopes.
- Gesture-based lightsaber throw.
- In-game menu tutorial videos.
- Cheat menu (hidden in the Datapad).
- Companion app for streamlined mod download.”
Getting started is fairly simple. All you need is a Meta Quest or Pico 4 VR headset, a computer, and a copy of Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, currently available for $9.99 via Steam. Here’s how it works:
- Download the free SideQuest app on your computer and install JKXR on Quest or Pico 4 (It’s important to note that your Quest headset must be in Developer Mode. More on how to do that here).
- Open JKXR on your headset and allow any and all permissions requested by the app to automatically generate the necessary folders.
- Head to “Jedi OutcastGameDatabase” on your PC and copy the asset files “assets0.pk3, assets1.pk3, assets2.pk3, assets5.pk3” from the original PC version of the game into “JKXRJK2base.”
- Slip on your headset, visit the “Unknown Sources” section, and select JKXR to begin playing.
If you get lost during the process, Team Beef has included a Companion App in an attempt to help simplify the process. There’s even a short demo for those on the fence about playing.
Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast is available to play now in VR on Meta Quest and Pico 4 VR headsets. The team says that plans for a PC VR launch will hopefully arrive on a later day.
