Swim With The Sharks In Nat Geo’s New AR Experience – VRScout

We’re going to need a bigger smartphone…

Sharkfest is just around the corner and National Geographic and Verizon are kicking off the annual celebration of all things predatory fish with a new educational augmented reality (AR) experience that brings you up close and personal with the ocean’s apex predator.

You can access the web-based experience by scanning the QR code provided below. You can also find the code on channel 941 on your Fios set-top box if you feel like jumping through a few additional hoops. Upon scanning the image and allowing the website access to your smartphone’s camera, a virtual shark cage will appear in your real-world space.

Tapping the cage with your will immerse you in a 360-degree virtual environment where you can gaze at sharks and divers as they swim by and watch a series of 2D videos. This includes “Bull Shark Vs. Hammerhead,” “Tiger Shark Vs. Dolphin,” “Diving With Sharks,” “Swimming With a Whale Shark,” “The Elite Great White,” and “When Sharks Attack.”

My personal favorite is “Diving With Sharks.” I had chills running down my spine as I watched the divers swim perilously close to a massive shiver of sharks while inspecting for scars.

“We are committed to pushing the boundaries of storytelling to drive engagement and are grateful to have collaborated with Verizon on this immersive experience,” said Christen Harris, SVP of platform distribution sales at Disney Entertainment, on the official website. “Creating interactive moments with technology like AR gives fans unique access to our unrivaled programming like SHARKFEST.”

“By delivering next-gen entertainment and augmented reality experiences, we’re offering customers engaging and immersive content that they likely haven’t experienced before,” added Kris Soumas, head of consumer content partnerships for Verizon Consumer Group. “National Geographic has incredible content and we’re excited for our customers to interact with it for themselves.”

National Geographic and Verizon’s Sharkfest AR Experience is available now on iOS and Android devices until August 1st. For more information check out the official website here.
