Professor Tommi Mikkonen, a leading figure in software engineering from the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, will speak at the IQT Nordics conference in June 2024. With his D. Sc. (Tech.) in software engineering and a career marked by pioneering contributions to the field, Professor Mikkonen brings a unique perspective on the intersection of software engineering and quantum programming to the conference.

Professor Mikkonen’s academic journey began with his doctoral research in 1999, focusing on using formal methods in software engineering. Since then, he has been at the forefront of several technological breakthroughs in software engineering. His work has spanned mobile software, web engineering, and the development of liquid, multi-device software. More recently, his academic focus at the University of Jyväskylä has shifted to the burgeoning field of quantum programming, a critical area as the world prepares for the quantum computing era.

In addition to his academic pursuits at the University of Jyväskylä, Professor Mikkonen has gained valuable industry experience. He worked on experimental software at Sun Microsystems Research in California, USA, from 2006 to 2008. Later, he led experimental IoT device and software development projects at Mozilla in California from 2016 to 2017. These experiences gave him practical insights into applying software engineering principles in various technological contexts.

Recognized as an influential figure in the field, Professor Mikkonen was named the Open World Hero in 2017 and has been listed as a top 100 Finnish ICT influencer for several consecutive years (2017-2020). His contributions to the field have been further acknowledged by his Finnish Academy of Science and Letters membership since 2021.

At the IQT Nordics conference, Professor Mikkonen is expected to share insights into the challenges and opportunities in quantum programming. His presentation will likely cover the evolution of software engineering in the context of quantum computing, exploring how traditional software engineering principles can be adapted to the quantum realm and what new paradigms and methodologies are emerging.

IQT Nordics/Helsinki, June 24-26, Aalto University, Dipoli Building, Helsinki
The second annual Nordics conference partners with Bluefors, Business Finland, The Finnish Quantum Institute, and VTT and will focus on real-world quantum technology applications.
