In our quest to steward and support teams building the decentralized web, we’ve just reached another significant milestone — a total of 300 projects have been signed through our grants programs. As previously with the 100 and 200 grants milestones, we’d like to seize this moment to share some insights into what’s going on behind the scenes.

Since the grants program was launched in December 2018, we’ve received a total of 840 applications, of which 302 have been accepted. To date, 143 teams have already completed their projects and 212 have successfully delivered their first milestone. See the full list of accepted applications here.

The projects funded to date cover all layers of the Web3 technology stack. Almost half cover runtime modules and development tools. The remainder include wallets, UI development, tooling, cryptography, bridges and more.

The teams are working on a wide range of decentralized use cases, including digital identity and privacy, IoT, games, data storage, and finance, among others.

Those who’ve been following us for longer will remember that we’ve had two different grants programs for a while now — General and Open Grants.

The introduction of the Open Grants program was meant to introduce an easy, transparent way for teams to obtain funding. Applications and milestone deliveries would be discussed and accepted transparently on GitHub, with payments being made in cryptocurrencies. And indeed, this concept turned out to work so well that we found ourselves receiving the vast majority of applications via Open Grants, as you can see in the graphic below.

Hence, we decided to eliminate the overhead of having to decide between the two in the first place and merged the two programs into one while maintaining the best of both worlds.

We now offer recurring grants tracked transparently on GitHub and disbursed in cryptocurrencies, while also allowing for payments in fiat and private applications, all via a single repository. The full application process is outlined here.

In order to scale the grants program and keep the process flowing, we allow for external milestone evaluations. See here for more details.
