Worms ETH Video Game NFT Canceled Due To Heavy Backlash

The Worms ETH video game NFT was Canceled due to heavy backlash as many fans and game developers complain about other NFT plans as we are reading more today in our latest ethereum news.

Team17 canceled plans to release Ethereum FNTs based on the Worms video game franchise and the game studio and fans really complained about the plans echoing pushback to other game NFT projects. It is quite familiar this to happen lately, a video game firm announces NFT plans and then the backlash ensues. In some cases, the company cancels the plans and issues a report. This happened again this week when the publisher Team17 and the plans for the Worms ETH Video game NFT have been canceled.

This afternoon, the game publisher confirmed that it was changing course after facing a lot of social media backlash following the NFT announcement:

“Team17 is today announcing an end to the MetaWorms NFT project. We have listened to our Teamsters, development partners, and our games’ communities, and the concerns they’ve expressed, and have therefore taken the decision to step back from the NFT space.”

The British publisher planned to release NFT collectibles inspired by the Worms franchise that sold 75 million games over the years. Team17 partnered with Reality Gaming Group to release the collectibles ont the Ethereum sidechain called the Digital Asset TRading platform. In addition to pushback from fans and video game community members, Team17 faced resistance from the partners. Aggro Crab which has a game released as well, said that it will no longer work with Team17 if the NFT plans are not canceled:

“We believe NFTs cannot be environmentally friendly, or useful, and really are just an overall fucking grift. Needless to say, we will not be working with them on further titles, and encourage other indie developers to do the same unless this decision is reversed.”

Other developers that worked with team17 like SMG Studio and Playtonic Games posted similar messages opposing the NFT projects. While the ETH-based games such as The Sandbox and Axie Infinity generated similar attention with billions of dollars in NFT trading volume while traditional video gaming companies faced resistance from gamers when entering the NFT space. An NFT acts like a deed of ownership to a digital item and it can represent things like art, videos, and music but the overall NFT market soared in 2021 generating $23 billion worth of trading volume according to DappRAdar.
