Live streaming platform Twitch announced that starting on October 18, 2022, live broadcasts of casino games like slots, roulette, and dice games on sites including Stake.com, Rollbit.com, and Duelbits.com will be prohibited.

In a statement on Twitter, Twitch admitted that gambling content has been “a big topic of discussion” in the community, adding that:

“Today, we want to update you on our plans. While we prohibit sharing links or referral codes to all sites that include slots, roulette, or dice games, we’ve seen some people circumvent those rules and expose our community to potential harm.”

Websites that are not licensed in the US or in other jurisdictions that provide sufficient consumer protection will be prohibited as well, and others may be identified going forward but, ironically, platforms focused on sports betting, fantasy football, and poker will still be allowed.

“So, we’ll be making a policy update on October 18th to prohibit streaming of gambling sites that include slots, roulette, or dice games that aren’t licensed either in the U.S. or other jurisdictions that provide sufficient consumer protection… We will continue to allow websites that focus on sports betting, fantasy sports, and poker,” the platform added. 

The said decision of Twitch drew out mixed reactions from the community. Some agreed while some did not, including a Twitter user’s reply that highlights a scenario where bettors were raging against a streamer due to a misunderstanding about gambling. 

Meanwhile, though some Twitch streamers have already bragged that they have secured sponsorships worth more than $1 million a month from such websites, there have been fears that the influence of crypto-related gambling content has led some users to lose substantial amounts of money or develop an addiction.

While some top Twitch stars have threatened to boycott the site unless action was taken.

Currently, the data of TwitchMetrics shows that crypto streaming does not have a big fandom compared to other types of streaming. The top five “most popular” Crypto Twitch Streamers only has an average of 955 viewers. 

“We’ll share specifics on the updates to our Gambling policy soon, including the full policy language, to make sure everyone is clear on our new rules before they take effect on October 18th,” Twitch concluded.
