Famous Crypto Airdrops in History

One of the most famous airdrops that happened was in 2017 when about 500,000 users joined OmiseGo’s airdrop, where OmiseGo allotted 5% of its total token supply to those who would hold at least 0.1 $ETH in their wallets. That airdrop was known as the most number of crypto airdrop participants.

Meanwhile, the first known airdrop was recorded in 2014, when Auroracoin, a crypto project that aimed to be Iceland’s national cryptocurrency, planned to distribute 50% of the $AUR tokens to Icelandic citizens who hold a national ID.

10 Biggest Crypto Airdrops of 2023

Almost a decade after the first-ever crypto airdrop happened, let us take a look at the top 10 biggest airdrops of 2023 as recorded by CoinGecko:

Arbitrum: $1.969 Billion

Arbitrum is a layer-2 blockchain for Ethereum that claims to make the network’s transactions faster and cheaper. It has two main products—the Arbitrum Rollup and AnyTrust protocols—that aim to attract dApps developers who want to build on top of Ethereum while benefiting from Arbitrum’s scalability.

As it introduced its governance token, $ARB, it hinted at a big airdrop. The $ARB airdrop began on March 23, 2023 and ended on September 24, 2023.

The project split its airdrop into two categories—for individual users of the platform and for DAOs building dApps on top of Arbitrum.

For Arbitrum users, the project allocated about 12% or 1.162 billion $ARB worth of prizes. Arbitrum implemented a points system. For those who earned three points,  1,250 $ARB was rewarded, while for those who got 12 points and above, 10,250 $ARB was rewarded. Some tasks to qualify included using Arbitrum as an asset bridge, conducting a certain number of transactions, and conducting a certain amount of transaction.

Meanwhile, a separate distribution was allocated for DAOs that were building applications in the Arbitrum ecosystem. Arbitrum allotted more than 1%, or 113 million $ARB worth of prizes.

All in all, valued at its all-time high (ATH) token price of $1.69, the total worth of $ARB distributed during the airdrop was $1,969,296,101.

Blur: $0.818 Billion

Blur is an Ethereum-based NFT marketplace that focuses more on advanced NFT trading by serving both as a marketplace and an aggregator. It is managed by the Blur Foundation, which also facilitates community-led governance and participation in the DAO and assists contributors with the development and growth of the Blur ecosystem, including the Blur marketplace, aggregators, and Blend lending protocol.

Blur Foundation allotted 51%, or 1.53 billion, of $BLUR to the community. Twelve percent, or 360 million tokens, were first distributed from October 19, 2022, to February 14, 2023. The task needed to qualify was just to be an NFT trader across any Ethereum-based NFT marketplace.

Meanwhile, the remaining 39% is said to be distributed to the community through contributor grants, community initiatives, and incentive programs.

All in all, Blur had two rounds of airdrops: the first one was worth $446,197,003 and the second one was worth $371,830,836, valued at $BLUR’s ATH token price of $1.24.
