Kraken Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary

Today, Kraken is proud to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. For the last decade, it has been our goal to promote the adoption of cryptocurrencies and ensure that our clients enjoy a best-in-class experience when engaging with the crypto ecosystem. 

It’s amazing to think about the journey this industry has been through since Kraken’s founding and we are thrilled to have played a meaningful role in bringing so many new participants into the asset class. 

In celebration of our decade in crypto, we’d like to share some of our favorite moments through the years.

2011: The Beast Is Born

Mt Gox is hacked. Luckily they have an ally – the one and only Jesse Powell – who flies on his own dime to help out however he can. Jesse realizes the need for a safe and secure onramp into bitcoin, built with cutting edge technology and staffed by the most amazing crew in the world. The wheels are set in motion.

2012: In the Lab

Jesse finds a co-founder and begins building what will become the mighty Kraken. 

2013: Live and In Color

Kraken opens its virtual doors for the very first time and trading begins. Clients are drawn to our high security standards, friendly interface and ample liquidity.

2014: Walk the Talk
Kraken passes the world’s first proof of reserves audit, further enhancing our reputation as one of the safest, most reliable crypto exchanges in the world. Oh, and we offered DOGE.

2015: Game Recognize Game
Kraken becomes the first major crypto exchange to offer Ethereum for trading, recognizing the implications of its game-changing technology for the crypto industry. 

2016: Up, Up and Away
Kraken begins its acquisition streak and expands its products and services offering across the U.S. and Canada. The team continues to scale up worldwide and exchange volume grows to new heights. 

2017: Where the Pros Go
Kraken acquires Cryptowatch to offer best-in-class charting and trading tools for a new breed of elite crypto investors. We average nearly 25K new clients a day at the end of the year.

2018: Feature Rich

Kraken breaks new ground in crypto M&A yet again with the acquisition of Crypto Facilities, for the first time ever offering crypto futures trading in Europe.

2019: Skin in the Game

Kraken gives clients a chance to participate in the company’s growth and success with a BnkToTheFuture fundraise. :fundraise not something solo

2020: Wyoming

Wyoming goes crypto (nice flex WYO!) and becomes the first U.S. state to create a Digital Asset Bank Charter.  Kraken is first to receive the Wyoming stamp of approval and Kraken Bank is born. In a full circle, Kraken, the first to offer Ethereum back in 2015, is now the first to offer Ethereum 2.0 staking to its clients. Staking is a way for clients to earn rewards and make their crypto work for them. Clients came in droves; just four days after launch, Kraken hits a key milestone with clients depositing more than 100K ETH.

2021: A Decade in Crypto

In just ten years, Kraken grows to a company of nearly 2000 diverse, talented and dedicated “Krakenites.” This year, we launched a brand new Kraken app (to complement our Pro and Futures apps) and Kusama Parachain Slot Auctions, setting the stage for another decade of prosperity, innovation and growth in crypto.
