1. NBA Top Shot

Dapper Labs’ monstrously successful NBA Top Shot is the gold standard of sport NFT collections.

Launched in July 2019 as a digital reproduction of traditional trading card culture, NBA Top Shot was ahead of the curve from the start. Now, cards of the moments in high demand have an average sale price of $68,000.

  • Blockchain: Flow

2. MLB Champions

MLB Champions began life in 2018 as an NFT collectibles platform but also an actual game. Although the game ended in 2020, now the minted MLB Champions NFTs are traded on secondary markets.

The avatars are little bobblehead figures striking various poses, and they have a current floor price of 0.00692 ETH ($9.17 at the time of writing). So if you want to buy yourself a piece of baseball history, it’s definitely affordable.

  • Blockchain: Ethereum

3. Sorare

Counting Antoine Griezmann and Gerard Piqué among its official backers, Sorare is a platform for collecting soccer NFTs, as well as baseball and basketball.

Fans can buy trading cards from players all over the world, which they can use to manage virtual teams. Despite launching in 2019, the platform still looks like it was designed by an incredibly enthusiastic fan. This should improve over time.

2022, for example, was a year of expansion to the Sorare community to other sports. Initially, a soccer NFT project, Sorare partnered with the MBL and NBA to launch NFTs and games for baseball and basketball fans.

4. Torque Squad

The Torque Squad was built for the motorsport community. The motor racing NFT collection just launched to the public and is already offering real-world utilities to its collectors.

Holders can win tickets to the F1 Grand Prix events, and the project promises more goodies on the way. With backing from Animoca Brands and a place in the REVV Motorsport ecosystem, this is certainly one collection to watch.

  • Blockchain: Ethereum

5. Bryson DeChambeau Limited Edition NFTs

In an avant-garde movement, Bryson DeChambeau became the first professional golfer to have his own NFT collection.

This limited edition collection comprises 73 editions of five different cards, and, for over 9 months at the time of writing, none of the NFTs had been listed for sale. The rarest of all NFTs of this collection was sold in an auction in March 2021 for 24,15 ETH ($38,036.25 then.)

  • Blockchain: Ethereum

6. NFL All Day

NFL All Day is the American football version of NBA Top Shot. The platforms look the same, and Dapper Labs attempts to generate the same hype as each new collection drops.

Although the prices aren’t as high as NBA Top Shot, and the players aren’t as well-known internationally, this collection is also engaging the sports community with Web3. The best NFL moments are officially licensed, and fans can keep and trade them as they wish. One of the highest recorded sales is for a Pat Mahomes’ NFT for $30,000, but as new seasons start and rarities change, the project still got much to grow.

  • Blockchain: Flow

7. WNBA Top Shot

A pioneer, WNBA Top Shot is, as you might have guessed from the name, the women’s league version of NBA Top Shot.

With this project, you can collect the best moments of the best players in WNBA, such as Sue Bird, A’Ja Wilson, and Sylvia Fowles. Backed up by the NBA, this is also one of the most important women-led NFT projects in the space.

  • Blockchain: Flow

8. Socios

Another soccer NFT project, Socios takes its name from the members of Spanish support-run soccer teams. Lionel Messi is a global brand ambassador, and Atlético de Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano stadium has offered its hallowed turf as a prize for the lucky fan who wins Socio’s upcoming competition.

Throughout 2022, the brand announced that several of the biggest soccer teams would be joining the project – such as Benfica, Fluminense, and Barcelona.

Through the Socios app, you can have an all-around fan experience, as opposed to a simple NFT trading platform. On their official app, you can oversee and buy Fan Tokens that grant you access to a wide range of rewards and benefits.

  • Blockchain: Chiliz

9. DeRace

Horse-racing is a sport, right? If so, then DeRace is a great NFT collection for sports fans. More than that, it’s an NFT horse racing metaverse.

Partnered with Animoca Brands, Binance, and Chainlink, the platform has its own currency, DERC. Players can use their purchased NFTs to run in races. The horse avatars’ current floor price is 0.643 ETH ($845.70 at the time of writing), and there are prize pools with rewards available for the winning nag.

  • Blockchain: Ethereum

10. The Association

One of the first dynamic NFT collections in the sports world, The Association became a huge success shortly after launching in April 2022 by the NBA.

Unlike most other sports NFT collections, these assets represent players’ and teams’ performance in each season. This means the NFTs change in appearance and value according to new characteristics.

  • Blockchain: Ethereum

What are NFTs and what can they do for sports?

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are digital assets registered on a blockchain that is often used in the sports world as digital collectibles. Whoever buys an NFT of a certain collection gets access to specific utilities linked to the project and holds ownership of that unique and provably authentic.

Watch the video below for a visual and broader explanation of what NFTs are.

If you want to start collecting sports NFTs, you should get informed about the space, seek financial advice, and research your desired collections.

While many NFT collections are available for sale on secondary markets, such as OpenSea and Magic Eden, most sports NFT projects have their own marketplaces.

The sports community jumping into NFTs

Since the overwhelming success of NBA Top Shot first brought NFT collections to mainstream audiences, more and more projects have been developed in the sports world.

In July 2021, we could already point out dozens of sports NFT collections popping up – whether on basketball, soccer, tennis, and other sports.

As 2022 went on, the NFT landscape evolved considerably, with projects partnering up with famous Web2 brands and expanding their communities.
