Square Enix appears to be moving farther into the domain of games based on non-fungible tokens and the blockchain after dabbling into the realm of NFTs.

Documents connected to the company’s financial performance for the six months ended September 30 this year show the company’s developing attitude on NFTs. This follows Square Enix’s collaboration with Double Jump Tokyo to produce Million Arthur NFTs.

Making its foray into blockchain gaming

The Million Arthur “proof of concept” that aims to bring together NFTs and the company’s titles is mentioned in the financial results from November 5, but that phase is now ended, as the Final Fantasy developer “will shift to full commercialisation phase” with digital arts.

Square Enix then looks to a more “robust” entry into blockchain gaming, citing the spread of NFTs as technological advancement, claiming that “token economics” – effectively blockchain systems – is gaining traction in the sector.

Square Enix claims that this implies it will focus on blockchain games based on token economics as a kind of decentralized content and that it would set its sighs on blockchain games “based on token economics as a form of decentralised content.”

So far, so good

In general, the company’s journey into NFTs was a success, and its fan base should expect to see a lot more of it in the future. This makes sense as a business model, as the Million Arthur NFT set, which was released on October 14, has already sold out, according to the publisher.

Meanwhile, the Final Fantasy 7: The First Solider battle royale mobile game will debut on November 17, 2021. It will be set 30 years before the events of the original Final Fantasy 7, and it will combine genre themes with regular series aspects.
