Visa makes foray into NFTs, launches course to support digital creators

Artists who wish to sell their work using non-fungible tokens will be able to do so with the help of a new service being launched by payments processing giant Visa.

According to an article on its website, Visa is collaborating with former Major League Baseball player turned NFT artist Micah Johnson to help digital designers gain a better grasp of NFTs and how they work.

This is hardly Visa’s first foray into the world of non-financial transactions. The company purchased its first NFT around two months ago, bringing it into the Metaverse for the first time.

Visa buys Cryptopunk

With a purchase price of $150,000, Visa acquired Cryptopunk NFT, one of the 10,000 collectible characters whose ownership information is maintained on the Ethereum blockchain.

As the company’s first foray into the world of virtual reality, digital assets, and avatars, this was a watershed moment.

The Visa NFT Initiative allows artists to pay for their Visa card.

On Wednesday, Johnson participated in the roll-out of Visa’s latest NFT initiative. A collaborative effort is being sought by the two organizations to teach creators and small companies how to use NFTs to make and sell digital artworks.

Reaching more people

Visa will host an open application process and select a group of makers for the initial class after reviewing all of the applications received. During that time, the company has stated that it will provide support to the organization as well as consulting services.

Additionally, the creators will receive access to the networks of Visa’s payment partners, which will enable them to reach new clients.

Johnson, an artist, began releasing NFTs in January 2020 and plans to continue doing so. After quitting professional baseball in 2018, he began learning about cryptocurrency and distributed ledger technology DLT in 2019.

In February this year, he released Aku, an animated black astronaut. Aku’s message became a global sensation, and the film was the first non-fiction flick ever optioned for the big screen, according to Time magazine.

Micah believes that NFTs provided him with the opportunity to build a community of people who were interested in supporting his work in a way that went beyond simply admiring or sharing it.
