“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet” — William Shakespeare

A thing’s utility is far more important than just its name. But sometimes a name is more than just a name.

Who is Kin?

Kin was created by the team/company that launched the Kik messenger app. At the time, they were a group of students at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.

The go-forward strategy of the project is now overseen by the Kin Foundation. They monitor the growth of the ecosystem, keep things running and deal with the initial disbursement of the currency.

Look at them as the core muscles of the human body. They are there to keep the center strong, to stabilize and protect the whole system, but by no means are they the only part making it work. Nor do they want to be, this is about a decentralized community.

Out from the core of the body come the legs, feet, arms, and hands. These parts are made by applications. Created by developers to enhance our digital experience. They get us where we are going, and they grab us to hold our attention.

The head? That’s the internet. Without an invention that lets us sense the world around us in ways we never thought possible, this currency wouldn’t function.

Each of the parts helps make a working human. But in this decentralized system, the pieces function more like Voltron. They can work separately but they come together to complete the mega bot. The more lion bot pieces the bigger the humanoid, which equals a better online experience for us.

This does sound like many other cryptocurrencies though. So what’s the difference? Utility.

What is Kin?

Kin was originally designed to be a cryptocurrency implemented into the Kik messenger app. But along the way, the team realized that it could have far greater reach if many apps use it. To become the digital currency used in our online world, they set out to make Kin easy to integrate into any application.

With the digital world becoming more and more of our daily existence, the likelihood of us needing a way to monetize new interactions in this space becomes greater.

Imagine getting paid a tiny amount for watching an advertisement inside an app (instead of being forced to), or perhaps getting tipped by fellow app users for creating a funny meme. Every micro interaction you have online can be a transaction.

Picture a Canadian retiree tipping a young Australian student for digitally restoring the only wedding photo they had, recently found hiding on an old laptop. Or a weary new father in Scotland tipping an unrelated grandfather in the USA for some sage fatherly wisdom given on a popular forum application.

You keep the currency in your digital wallet and use it in your favorite apps. It sounds simple, but we’re talking about millions of people using it, over countless apps, from all across the world. That’s what Kin is making possible already. Unlike other projects, they have real-world applications and real-world users right now. Aside from Kik Messenger, you may be familiar with some of the apps, like Rave, Tapatalk, Whisper, or Perfect 365.

Passing value to one another across the globe for the little things is a new way to bring us together. A new way to find more family out there, a new way to find more kin.

So what’s in a name?

It’s you, it’s me, it’s family. It’s our world. 🌎 🌍 🌏

We Are Kin.
